Berlin Brandenburg Airport "Willy Brandt" (IATA: BER), opened in October 2020 after almost fifteen years of legendary construction delays, is Germany's third-busiest airport and the sole commercial airport serving Berlin and the state of Brandenburg. It is located approximately 27 kilometres southeast of central Berlin in the municipality of Schönefeld, on the former site of the old Schönefeld Airport (SXF).
The airport operates two main terminal buildings. Terminal 1 (T1) is the main terminal and handles the vast majority of passenger operations — Lufthansa, easyJet, Eurowings, Ryanair, and most major carriers. The airport station "Flughafen BER" is located directly beneath Terminal 1 at underground level U2. Terminal 2 (T2) is adjacent to Terminal 1 and connected by a short walk. Terminal 5 — the former Schönefeld terminal building used during the airport's early operational phase — is permanently closed. All passenger operations now use Terminals 1 and 2 exclusively.
The FEX Airport Express train connects BER to Berlin Hauptbahnhof in approximately 23 minutes, but for destinations across Berlin's vast footprint, for diplomatic and government travellers, and for any passenger with luggage requiring door-to-door delivery, private chauffeur remains the most direct and reliable option.
