Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) — Germany's Capital Gateway

Berlin Brandenburg Airport "Willy Brandt" (IATA: BER), opened in October 2020 after almost fifteen years of legendary construction delays, is Germany's third-busiest airport and the sole commercial airport serving Berlin and the state of Brandenburg. It is located approximately 27 kilometres southeast of central Berlin in the municipality of Schönefeld, on the former site of the old Schönefeld Airport (SXF).

The airport operates two main terminal buildings. Terminal 1 (T1) is the main terminal and handles the vast majority of passenger operations — Lufthansa, easyJet, Eurowings, Ryanair, and most major carriers. The airport station "Flughafen BER" is located directly beneath Terminal 1 at underground level U2. Terminal 2 (T2) is adjacent to Terminal 1 and connected by a short walk. Terminal 5 — the former Schönefeld terminal building used during the airport's early operational phase — is permanently closed. All passenger operations now use Terminals 1 and 2 exclusively.

The FEX Airport Express train connects BER to Berlin Hauptbahnhof in approximately 23 minutes, but for destinations across Berlin's vast footprint, for diplomatic and government travellers, and for any passenger with luggage requiring door-to-door delivery, private chauffeur remains the most direct and reliable option.

How It Works

  • Flight tracking — your driver monitors your flight from departure, adjusting to your actual landing at no extra charge
  • Meet and greet — your driver waits in the T1 arrivals hall with a name sign, assists with luggage, and escorts you to the vehicle. T2 arrivals walk to the shared T1 pickup area
  • Terminal 5 is closed — all BER arrivals now use Terminals 1 and 2. If your airline previously operated from T5, it now operates from T1 or T2
  • Fixed price confirmed in advance — no meter, no surge
  • Door to door — direct to any address in Berlin, Potsdam, or beyond

* Approximate times under normal traffic. The A113 approach from BER to central Berlin is frequently congested during weekday peak hours (07:30–09:30 and 16:30–19:00). During major Berlin events — Berlinale, Berlin Marathon, IFA — additional congestion affects all routes through the city centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Terminal 5 at Berlin Airport still open?

No. Terminal 5 — the former Schönefeld Airport terminal building that operated during BER's early phase — is permanently closed. All passenger operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport now use Terminals 1 and 2 exclusively. If your airline previously used T5, it now operates from T1 or T2. Your driver will meet you in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall regardless of which terminal your flight uses, as T2 shares the same landside pickup zone.

How long does it take from BER to central Berlin?

Approximately 35 to 50 minutes by private chauffeur under normal traffic conditions via the A113 motorway. To Charlottenburg or Messe Berlin on the western side of the city, add 10 to 15 minutes. During weekday peak hours and major event periods, allow up to 60 to 75 minutes for central destinations.

Does the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. Your driver monitors your flight in real time and adjusts to your actual landing. There is no additional charge for delays within the standard waiting period.

Can you arrange a transfer from BER directly to Potsdam or Sanssouci?

Yes. Potsdam city centre is approximately 38 kilometres from BER Airport — approximately 40 to 58 minutes by private chauffeur. Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof add a few additional minutes depending on the specific destination within Potsdam.

Can you arrange long-distance transfers from BER to Prague or Warsaw?

Yes. Berlin Airport to Prague is approximately 355 kilometres — 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours via the A10/A13 and the D8 motorway through Germany and the Czech Republic. Berlin to Warsaw approximately 575 kilometres — 5 hours 15 minutes to 6 hours via the A12/A2.
