Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauß (MUC) — Bavaria's Gateway

Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauß (IATA: MUC) is Germany's second-busiest airport and Europe's eleventh busiest, handling over 41 million passengers annually and connecting Munich to over 200 destinations worldwide. Located approximately 28 kilometres northeast of the city centre near the town of Freising, it is the primary hub for Lufthansa and Star Alliance operations in southern Germany and serves as the gateway to Bavaria, the Austrian Alps, and all of southeastern Europe.

The airport has two passenger terminal complexes. Terminal 1 handles all non-Lufthansa carriers — British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Air France, KLM, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and dozens of others — across five modules (A through E). The new T1 Pier, opened 21 April 2026, adds 95,000 m² of non-Schengen capacity for approximately 6 million additional passengers annually; if your flight is intercontinental or from a non-Schengen country, confirm whether your gate is in the new Pier. Terminal 2 is operated jointly by Munich Airport and Lufthansa and handles all Lufthansa and Star Alliance partner operations. The T2 Satellite is connected to T2 via an underground people mover (PTS) running every 4 minutes — gates J, K, and L are in the Satellite. The inter-terminal shuttle between T1 and T2 runs every 10 to 20 minutes landside.

Important clarification on Munich airports: Memmingen Airport (IATA: FMM), marketed as "Munich West," is located 130 kilometres southwest of Munich — over 90 minutes from the city centre by bus. It is not a Munich airport in any practical sense and is exclusively served by Ryanair. A transfer between MUC and FMM is a major ground journey. Always verify your IATA code (MUC vs FMM) when booking flights to Munich.

How It Works

  • Flight tracking — your driver monitors your flight from departure, adjusting to your actual landing at no extra charge
  • Meet and greet — your driver waits in the arrivals hall at the correct terminal with a name sign, assists with luggage, and escorts you to the vehicle
  • Terminal clarity — T1 for non-Lufthansa carriers; T2/Satellite for Lufthansa and Star Alliance. New T1 Pier for non-Schengen T1 arrivals from April 2026. Specify your airline when booking
  • Fixed price confirmed in advance — no meter, no surge, no Oktoberfest multipliers
  • Door to door — direct to any Munich address, Alpine resort, or European destination

* Approximate times under normal traffic. The A9 motorway north of Munich and the A99 ring road are frequently congested during weekday peak hours. During Oktoberfest (September–October) and major Messe München trade fairs, all approaches to the city add 15 to 30 minutes.

Oktoberfest Transfer Note

During Oktoberfest (19 September–4 October 2026), ride-hailing apps surge to 3x to 5x normal fares during peak Oktoberfest hours. Pre-booking your airport transfer eliminates this entirely. Your driver is confirmed and priced before you land, regardless of the festival activity level in the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the new T1 Pier at Munich Airport?

The new Terminal 1 Pier opened on 21 April 2026, adding 95,000 m² of dedicated non-Schengen arrival and departure capacity. It handles intercontinental and non-Schengen arrivals for Terminal 1 airlines (non-Lufthansa carriers). If your flight arrives from outside Schengen on a non-Lufthansa carrier, your gate may be in the new Pier — confirm when booking so your driver is at the correct pickup point.

Which airlines use Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2 at Munich Airport?

Terminal 1 handles all airlines except Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance partners — including British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air France, and KLM. Terminal 2 (and the T2 Satellite) handles exclusively Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and all Star Alliance partners including United, Singapore Airlines, and ANA. The inter-terminal shuttle runs every 10 to 20 minutes between T1 and T2.

Is Memmingen Airport (FMM) actually close to Munich?

No. Memmingen Airport (FMM), marketed as "Munich West," is approximately 130 kilometres southwest of Munich — over 90 minutes from the city centre. It is exclusively served by Ryanair. A transfer from FMM to Munich is a major separate journey. Always check your IATA code (MUC vs FMM) when booking flights advertised as "Munich."

Does the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. Your driver monitors your flight in real time and adjusts to your actual landing time. There is no additional charge for delays within the standard waiting period.

Can you arrange a direct transfer from Munich Airport to Salzburg?

Yes. Munich Airport to Salzburg is approximately 145 kilometres — 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 50 minutes via the A8 motorway. We also serve Innsbruck (160 km, 1h30–2h), Garmisch-Partenkirchen (95 km, 1h–1h20), and Neuschwanstein Castle (120 km, 1h20–1h45).
