Private Chauffeur in Sofia — Bulgaria's Capital at the Crossroads of Southeast Europe

Sofia is Bulgaria's capital and largest city — a metropolitan area of 1.3 million people set at the foot of Mount Vitosha, one of the few European capitals with a national park visible from its city centre. The city is one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited urban settlements, with an archaeological and architectural heritage that ranges from the Roman-era Serdica beneath its streets to the Byzantine St. George Rotunda, the Ottoman-era Banya Bashi Mosque, and the magnificent neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — all within walking distance of each other in the city centre. This density of civilisational history, in a city still relatively undiscovered by international tourism, gives Sofia a cultural authenticity that more heavily-visited capitals often lack.

Bulgaria's adoption of the Euro in January 2026 — joining the Eurozone after years of preparation and following the fixed lev-euro peg — marks a fundamental turning point in the country's European integration and signals a new phase of business and investment confidence in Sofia. The city's strategic position — at the intersection of the EU's southeastern border with non-EU Western Balkans, Turkey, and the Black Sea region — makes it an increasingly important diplomatic and corporate hub for companies and institutions with interests across the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Black Sea area.

Blackcars Sofia is part of the Blackcars European network, connecting Sofia to Bucharest (approximately 6 hours), Athens (approximately 6 hours 30 minutes), Belgrade (approximately 4 hours), and all European destinations.

Sofia Airport (SOF) — Transfer Service

Sofia International Airport (IATA: SOF) — officially named Vasil Levski Airport after Bulgaria's national revolutionary hero — is Bulgaria's largest and busiest airport, located approximately 10 kilometres east of Sofia city centre. It handles the vast majority of Bulgaria's international air traffic and serves as the home base for Bulgaria Air alongside Wizz Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and over 25 other carriers. A major concession was awarded to the SOF Connect consortium to modernise and expand the airport — a new Terminal 3 is planned for completion by 2030, which will become the main facility; in the interim, the airport operates its existing two-terminal structure.

The terminal structure requires attention: Terminal 1 (T1) is the original, older building, primarily handling low-cost and charter carriers — Wizz Air operations are based here. Terminal 2 (T2) is the larger, modern facility opened in 2006, handling most scheduled international flights including Bulgaria Air, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Ryanair. T1 and T2 are approximately 800 metres apart, connected by a free shuttle bus running every 15 to 20 minutes. The Sofia Metro (M2 line) connects Terminal 2 directly to the city centre — Serdika Station in approximately 18 minutes. For Terminal 1 arrivals, the free shuttle to Terminal 2 is required before accessing the metro.

A dedicated Government Terminal, located in the western wing of Terminal 1, handles flights and operations involving the President, Prime Minister, and other high-ranking Bulgarian government officials. Arrivals on official state and government aircraft use this facility, with vehicle positioning coordinated through the National Security Service (NSO).

Important note: Uber does not operate in Bulgaria. The dominant ride-hailing app is Bolt. Official licensed taxis are available from the taxi kiosks in both terminal arrivals halls. For VIP, corporate, and diplomatic clients, pre-booked private chauffeur is the only mode providing a confirmed driver, confirmed price, and confirmed meet-and-greet before landing — essential in a city where informal taxi approaches to arrivals remain common.

Rila Monastery & Plovdiv — The Two Essential Day Excursions

Rila Monastery — the most important monument of Bulgarian Orthodox Christianity, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most visited sites in Bulgaria — is approximately 120 kilometres south of Sofia Airport, approximately 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 45 minutes by private chauffeur via the Struma motorway corridor. A full Rila day programme — morning departure, monastery visit, lunch at the adjacent village, and afternoon return — is the most requested private excursion from Sofia. Plovdiv — Bulgaria's second city, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, and European Capital of Culture 2019 — is 150 kilometres east of Sofia, approximately 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 55 minutes. Its Roman Amphitheatre, Byzantine Nebet Tepe citadel, and beautifully preserved National Revival quarter make it one of the most rewarding urban day trips in the Balkans.

Diplomatic & Government Transport — Sofia

Sofia is the seat of the Bulgarian Republic's constitutional institutions and an increasingly active diplomatic capital as Bulgaria's EU membership, NATO membership (since 2004), and Eurozone accession (January 2026) draw greater institutional attention to the country. The President of the Republic is at the Presidential Palace on Dondoukov Boulevard. The Bulgarian Parliament (Narodno Sabranie) is on the pl. Narodno Sabranie opposite the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The Council of Ministers and government administrative apparatus occupies the Government House on pl. Nezavisimost in the city centre. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is on Al. Zhendov Street.

The Government Terminal at SOF — the dedicated facility in the western wing of Terminal 1, operated by the 28th Air Detachment of the Bulgarian Air Force — receives and dispatches government aircraft at the highest security classification. For delegations arriving on official state aircraft through the Government Terminal, we coordinate vehicle positioning with the NSO advance team and ensure protocol-appropriate chauffeur is at the vehicle collection point at the agreed time. For visiting diplomatic delegations using commercial flights at T1 or T2, we provide exclusively allocated, fully discreet chauffeur with drivers operating under full confidentiality and coordination with embassy protocol teams as required.

Chauffeur Service Sofia Events

Sofia Film Fest — March

The Sofia International Film Festival — held each March — is one of the most respected film festivals in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, drawing international directors, distributors, press, and film industry professionals for screenings at the Lumière Cinema and other Sofia venues. SIFF holds FIAPF accreditation and serves as the principal platform for Balkan and Eastern European cinema on the international festival circuit. For international film industry guests attending SIFF, we provide airport transfers, hotel-to-cinema transport, and gala evening chauffeur throughout the festival week.

Sofia Live Festival — June

Sofia Live is Bulgaria's premier international music festival — held each June at the Arena Armeec (Sofia Arena), drawing headliners from rock, pop, and electronic music for a multi-day event. For VIP guests, artists, and corporate hospitality attendees, we provide airport collections, hotel-to-venue transport, and late-night post-concert returns throughout the festival.

National Palace of Culture (NDK) — Congresses & Corporate Events

The National Palace of Culture (Natsionalen Dvorets na Kulturata — NDK) is Bulgaria's largest multifunctional congress and events centre — a brutalist landmark on pl. Bulgaria in the city's southern centre, with 15 halls and a total capacity of 10,000. It hosts international congresses, corporate events, and cultural occasions throughout the year and is the primary venue for the Sofia International Book Fair, the International Exhibition of Inventions, and major government and EU-related conferences. For congress delegates and corporate event attendees, we provide airport transfers and full-day disposal from a single dispatcher contact.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — State & Diplomatic Occasions

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Southeast Europe, completed in 1912 to commemorate the Russian soldiers who died liberating Bulgaria from Ottoman rule — is the symbolic heart of Sofia and the venue for the most solemn state and religious occasions: the installation of the Bulgarian Patriarch, state funeral services, and the thanksgiving services that conclude major diplomatic visits. For diplomatic delegations attending occasions at Alexander Nevsky, we provide protocol-appropriate chauffeur with drivers familiar with the cathedral's vehicle access and parking arrangements.

Bansko Ski Season — Winter Transfers

Bansko — Bulgaria's premier ski resort and a Ski World Cup venue — is 160 kilometres south of Sofia Airport via the A3 and Struma corridor, approximately 1 hour 45 to 2 hours 15 minutes by private chauffeur. For ski season arrivals at SOF combining a Sofia programme with a Bansko ski week, we provide direct airport-to-Bansko transfers and in-resort disposal throughout the ski season (December to April). Borovets, the closest ski resort to Sofia at 75 kilometres, is approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes from the airport.

Corporate Sofia — Technology, Energy & Eurozone Investment

Bulgaria's Eurozone accession in January 2026 has accelerated institutional and corporate interest in Sofia as a destination for European investment, financial services expansion, and technology operations. Telerik (Progress Software), VMware Bulgaria, HP, and the Bulgarian Energy Holding generate significant executive transport demand. The annual Forbes Business Awards Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Business Leaders Forum, and the AmCham Bulgaria events calendar create concentrated corporate occasion transport demand throughout the year. For all corporate visits to Sofia, we provide airport transfers, hotel-to-venue transport, and full-day disposal for executives with multi-stop meeting programmes.
